James Sheehan
Chief, Charities Bureau, NY Attorney General
James Sheehan was appointed to his current position by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman in January 2014. The Charities Bureau is responsible for enforcement activities, trust regulation, oversight, and public outreach for the over 90,000 New York nonprofits, whose employees make up the largest nonprofit sector in this country. Previously, Mr. Sheehan served as New York?s first Chief Integrity Officer of the Human Resources Administration (HRA), the nation?s largest social services agency, with over 14,000 employees. In that role, he was responsible for both internal and external program integrity and compliance for HRA. He also previously served as the first New York State Medicaid Inspector General, from 2007-2011, and pioneered the use of data analysis tools to identify improper claims. He was also the Associate U.S. Attorney for Civil Programs in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), working in that office from 1980-2007. Mr. Sheehan received his B.A. from Swarthmore College and his J.D. from Harvard Law School.
