Simon Mawer

Simon Mawer is an innovation strategist who is passionate about the role human-centered design can play as a powerful enabler of change. He has over 15+ years experience working with healthcare leaders from the bedside to the boardroom: from system-wide transformations, newv enture creation, product, process, and service design, startup collaborations, risk, quality, and safety management, and innovation education and capability building for management and frontline teams. Simon currently serves as VP of Design and Chief of Staff at Alio Inc., a Series C remote patient monitoring startup that is transforming the management of chronic disease. Previously, Simon served as Innovation Manager and Director of Education Programs at Plug and Play—the world’s largest corporate innovation ecosystem and most active venture capital firm, and Director of Innovence Lab at Stanford Medicine—an innovation lab focussed on addressing the most important clinical risks facing Stanford University’s medical institutions, its patients and providers. As a design educator, Simon co-authored the seminal playbook on Design Thinking for healthcare innovation: Discovery Design. He is lead instructor for Plug and Play's Innovation Master Class program and lectures on design at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, and at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Simon holds an MBA (Dean’s List and Bregman Scholar) from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. He graduated from Stanford University with certificates in Strategic Decisions and Risk Management and Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Simon received his training in human-centered design working in collaboration with the Stanford D.School and the design firm, IDEO while at Stanford. Simon also holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Technology, Sydney, and is admitted as a lawyer to the Supreme Court of New South Wales. Simon is originally from Sydney, Australia — and calls Palo Alto, California home. He is an avid surfer and average triathlete.
